Experimental Concept Model Renders

Narrative "New York Movie"

the cold projection highlights a dark room, an usherette is isolated - delving into the darkness of her secluded internal landscape

Edward Hopper - Background to New York Cinema

Edward Hopper was a frequent movie goer, and many of his paintings depicting cinemas and theaters stress the theme of loneliness. His theaters are often semi deserted with a few people isolated within the painting. As his work progressed, he found it harder to find suitable subjects in which he would be able to portray this loneliness through. His paintings represent the mythical landscape of the American dream.

There is hope within his paintings, as the frozen moments of pain and suffering do not create victims. All of the people representing in his paintings "are looking for something - looking out through windows, into themselves, probing the darkness, examining the world in their coffee cup."*

"New York Movie" Observations

The shape of the room, warm dark room leads the eye towards the movie screen, in which an array of cold blues juxtaposes the sensation of the warm comfortable cinema seats.

A man in the audience is highlighted by the pale light of the projected image. The chairs resemble the outlines of tombstones as each audience member keeps to themselves, akin to the solitude of a cemetery.

The ornate pillar of the cinema connotes the curves and warmth of flames, as the red light shades cast scarlet light from the elaborate stepped ceiling.

The depiction of a bar, separating the side room is reinforced by the large vertical line passing down the painting.

Segregated from the large room stands a lone woman, braced up on her toes against the wall, deep in thought, unsettled.

Her blue clothes enhance the sense of isolation to the rest of the scene, with a stark stroke of red, which leads to the thought of pain. The use of rough warm yellows turning into a cool white, smooth texture behind her create the impression of coldness.

The blue floral carpet pattern beneath her compliments the cold corner of the canvas in which she has been placed. The lamps behind her create dark shadows around her enhancing her solitude and seclusion.

There are stairs leading up to another area, behind the ornate red curtains. There is a warm light source up in the room, signifying hope and release from her troubles.
